Free Modern Dentistry in the Philadelphia Area for Over 15 Years and Now New
Regulations Suggest Modern Alternatives Should be Considered.
June 22 2009,
-Langhorne, PA - New regulations adopted by the city of Philadelphia in
March of 2009 mandate that each dentist practicing in Philadelphia, who use
dental amalgam which contains mercury must provide, at least one time, to each
patient an informational packet disclosing the pros and cons of amalgam and
alternatives.
Are Amalgam Dental Fillings
Hazardous?
Dental Amalgam is the silver-colored material used to fill
(restore) teeth that have cavities. Amalgam is made up of 50 percent mercury
and there is currently ongoing research and discussion about the health effects
of mercury in amalgam fillings. Small amounts of mercury are released as vapor
(gas) when amalgam fillings are placed or removed and through chewing. Research
suggests that high levels of mercury can cause toxic effects on the brain
nervous system, and kidneys. Generally, people with amalgam fillings have
higher levels of mercury in their body, however these levels are not high
enough to be considered toxic.
